Infinite – But How Infinite?

On the $45 Infinite plan you get unlimited standard national calls as well as standard national and international SMS and MMS. You also get 1GB of data for mobile internet usage, but to make this data allowance go even further, you also get infinite access to Facebook®, MySpace, Twitter, FourSquare & LinkedIn – just access them via their mobile websites. So it seems that for the sort of normal usage that most people have it’s unlimited and infinite! Of course check on the Vodafone website before signing up for all the details.

What’s Included Each Month?

The $45 Infinite plan has a slightly different approach to previous unlimited plans – in addition to all the unlimited calls, SMS and 1GB of data, you also have $45 of credit to use for services like voicemail, calls to 13/18 numbers and re-routed calls. With previous unlimited mobile plans by Vodafone and other providers, some services like voicemail and calls to 13 and 18 numbers have been charged in excess to the monthly access fee. So this is a great improvement!

What Mobile Phones Are Available?

There are lots of mobile phones available on the 12 and 24 month contract options. There are models by Apple, Nokia, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and Blackberry. Click here for a full list of phones on the $45 Infinite plan. Some of the great deals seem to be:

  • Apple iPhone 4 16GB on a 24 month plan with handset repayments of $18 per month. $63 per month for a latest model iPhone with unlimited calls and SMS is a great deal! More info >>
  • Apple iPhone 4 32GB on a 24 month plan with handset repayments of $24 per month. $69 per month makes this an offer worth looking at if you want the 32GB iPhone version. More info >>
  • Nokia N97 Mini on a 24 month plan with $0 handset repayments. So just get the $45 plan and there’s nothing more to pay for your phone – it’s a bargain! More info >>
  • Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro on a 24 month plan with $0 handset repayments. Unlimited standard calls, sms and a great mobile phone – all for $45 per month. More info >>

Any Specific Exclusions Of Note?

On the $45 Infinite plan, international calls are charged on top of your monthly access fee (the $65 Infinite plan lets you use your $65 credit for those) as well as services like premium SMS and MMS, Global Roaming, 123 Directory and more. When you go to sign up, make sure you read all the details about inclusions and exclusions.

Contract Lengths?

Fortunately Vodafone has given us some choice with this $45 unlimited plan – you can choose no contract (month-to-month), a 12 month contract or 24 month contract. On the 12 and 24 month contracts there are a range of phones available.

The unlimited 45 plan kept saying about unlimited calls to PERSONAL MOBILE NUMBERS (with an arrow symbol pointing upwards). I cannot find the information for this arrow anywhere in Vodafone’s website. Perhaps you can enlighten me.

What is the meaning of PERSONAL MOBILE NUMBERS? What happens when a subscriber on this plan calls a person who has a business mobile phone from his/her workplace? Does the call get rejected? or does the subcriber need to pay additional fees in addition to $45?

Also, how would Vodafone know about whether the mobile phone from another network like Optus or Telstra is a personal mobile no or a business no.?

Your response will be appreciated.

Hey Thomas,

good question. The up arrow (caret) refers to the following on the Vodafone website: ^Offer applies to standard personal TXT/PXT® sent to individuals from within Australia. Excludes premium and re-routed TXT/PXT®.Offer cannot be used for commercial purposes or for resale purposes.

Vodafone of course are the enforcers of what this really means and how they will interpret it. Any contract you have is with them and not us. So by asking them you’ll get an official answer. But I’ll give you my opinion. Just don’t use it for commercial purposes that take advantage of the infinite plans. If you start running SMS marketing campaigns for your business by sending hundreds or thousands of SMS – it’s not in the spirit of the Vodafone Infinite plan. If you make outbound business calls using a SIM dialler, it’s not in the spirit of the Infinite plans. That’s using it for commercial purposes and taking advantage of a great plan that is intended for individuals and their personal use.

If you call a business number the call won’t be rejected and there won’t be any additional fees. I also don’t think Vodafone will take any offense if you call or SMS someone who uses a company mobile phone. It is normal mobile usage to call people with business mobile phones. Google says “Don’t be evil” – I think a similar principle applies here. Use your mobile how a reasonable person can be expected to use a mobile and you’ll be fine. Of course check with Vodafone if you want their official explanation of their terms and conditions :)

The $45 Infinite Plan is a great deal, just don’t abuse the great offer!

whats ment by premium SMS and MMS becuase it says you can be charged for it??

Luke November 29, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Premium SMS and MMS are usually services like competitions, ringtones, horoscopes and all types of subscriptions. They usually range between about 50 cents and $5 per message. If you’re sending SMS and MMS to your friends you won’t have a problem. Sending a message to a number you see on the TV or an advertisement is likely to be premium. All mobile plans charge these premium services as extra – not just the Vodafone Infinite plans.

What is the better option, a month by month deal or locking this deal for 12 to 24 months. Will there be a better deal on the horizon or is this deal so good that a commitment to contact is the best way to go?

Luke December 15, 2010 at 8:05 am

Hey Kate,

good question. It really depends if you want or need a new mobile phone. If you want it at the subsidised price you get it for on a 12 or 24 month contract, then you’re getting a great unlimited call plan, plus a great deal on a new phone.

But if you don’t need a new phone, or you are happy to buy one outright then go month to month. These Vodafone Infinite plans are still very new, so I would guess it’s going to be a while before anything substantially better comes along. If you do decide to go month to month you can have that plan as long as you want – you won’t be booted off it, even if the plans change (for better or worse).

There are obviously a few considerations, but to break it down I’d say if you want an expensive phone, then look at the contract. If you are happy with your current handset or to pick up a cheaper one outright then maybe look at no contract.

Hope that helps!

I am on the infinite 45 plan with a nokia N8 and was wondering video calling to mobiles in australia are free or charged as i just rang Vodafone up and they said only if you are on the 65 or above……but on their website it says infinite video calling nationally?….your help would be greatful

cheers

Luke December 17, 2010 at 9:41 am

Hey Ash,

the Vodafone website currently says that you get infinite national video calls from within Australia – so you are right there. Call centre staff can make mistakes – so if you are concerned about it, then give Vodafone another call. You may get a different answer this time. If not, then point it out to them on the website and ask them to clarify.

If you can’t be bothered calling them again, print off a screen shot image from the Vodafone site and you’ll have it for reference if there is ever a billing problem. Hope that helps!

My wife has just been wacked with a $1000 bill (on the $45 infinite plan) becasue vodaphone claim that when she accessed the internet through her iphone that she failed to log off the internet properly. She accessed 2 websites which they say she stayed on for over 10 hours at a time, there is no real way to tell when you are using iphone that you have logged off. Is there any way we can appeal this bill???

Luke April 19, 2011 at 3:43 pm

Hi Anthony,

If you have an iPhone 4 (or the downloaded operating system for the iPhone 3GS), you can run applications in the background. I don’t know the details of this particular case, but it is possible that data was processing in the background.

You can do something about getting the bill reduced. The first thing to do is speak to Vodafone. If you are not satisfied with the outcome then asked to speak to a team leader or manager. If their response does also not satisfy you, then politely inform the team leader that you are still not satisfied and you are going to speak to the TIO. (www.tio.com.au). If you lodge a complaint with the TIO they will ask you if you have tried to resolve the issue with Vodafone first. Then they will try and get you in contact with someone senior at Vodafone who can discuss the issue with you. Hopefully you’ll be able to sort it out so everyone is happy!

Just remember to be polite and take good notes of everyone you speak to at Vodafone and at the TIO, You want to have records of everything. Best of luck,

Luke

Georgia September 17, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Hi,
I’m on this $45 a month plan and I have found it very good except my bill came through the other day and it said it was around $150. I haven’t called anyone internationally or used the internet once. I have only been sending messages and calling personal numbers. Also my messages have stopped sending for some reason but I can still call people. I’m really confused, can you please help?

Luke September 19, 2011 at 8:36 am

Hi Georgia,
the best way to see the cause of a higher bill than usual is to check out the summary pages on the invoice. You’ll see a breakdown and itemisation of the charges. If it’s still not making any sense or is an error, then call Vodafone on 1555 (free from your mobile) and they’ll explain it/sort it out.

As for the messages not sending that could be your “message centre number” – if a digit has been accidentally erased then SMS won’t send. Once again it’s best to speak to Vodafone for troubleshooting on that one, but it should be pretty quick to sort out.
