Vodafone is the first Australian mobile company to start selling the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 tablet. This is the device that Apple has been legally challenging for several months to stop it coming into the market. But that challenge has been quashed and the GALAXY Tab 10.1 is on its way and if you get in fast you’ll have one in time for Christmas!

Details

The Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 is a light weight tablet with great specs and features. The screen has 1280-by-800-pixel resolution at 149 pixels per inch (ppi). It weighs just 565 grams. It has a Dual-core 1Ghz NVIDIA® processor and the operating system is Android™ 3.1 Honeycomb.

This GALAXY tablet has a front facing and a rear facing camera. The back facing one is 3MP with auto-focus and LED flash and the front facing camera is 2MP.

The current version for release in Australia has 16GB of internal memory and is Wi-Fi and 3G enabled for data.

Vodafone is offering the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 as part of a wireless broadband bundle deal. It means you can pre order it now and get the tablet as well as a monthly mobile broadband allowance on a monthly account. With plans starting at just $39 in total per month on a 24 month contract, it’s probably much cheaper than you were expecting.

Vodafone has copped a fair bit of negative press in 2011 in relation to their network’s poor performance. In response they have launched some major marketing campaigns to reverse the perception that their network is troublesome. They’ve gone to lengths to show the world that their network is important and that they’re investing billions of dollars in improving it.

Other than just talk about it, they’ve also released the Vodafone Network Satisfaction Guarantee. Here are some of the important details:

1. If you sign up on a postpaid mobile phone plan or mobile broadband plan
2. And you’re not completely satisfied with your Vodafone network experience
3. Then call the Vodafone Customer Care team within 30 days of commencement of your contract
4. If  they can’t resolve your issues to your satisfaction then you can cancel the contract
5. You won’t pay any cancellation fees, you’ll just pay for what you’ve used until the cancellation happens

My wife’s Vodafone contract finished at the beginning of July. We hadn’t had any problem with them, and saw no reason to switch providers, so we decided to renew her $29 Cap and upgrade to a more modern phone. After much research I managed to convince her to move away from her beloved Nokias, and get an Android Smartphone – the Samsung Nexus S.

So, all we had to do now was to go to Vodafone’s website, log in, and see a big ‘Renew Contract Now’ button, right? Well, unfortunately it’s not that simple. I spent hours on Vodafone’s website trying to find a way to renew that contract. And in the end, it turned out to be impossible. The option is simply not there, and they come back with the message that we have to call them or go into a store to renew/upgrade a contract. How ridiculous!

Renewing a contract should be much easier than signing up a new customer on a contract

• There is no number porting involved
• They don’t need to verify identity or address or do a credit check
• They don’t need to collect any information from you – they already have it all

We contacted online customer support, and got the same line about phoning or going into a store. They did mention though, that online contract renewal was a popular request, and they would pass it on. Glad to see at least someone is doing something about such a popular request. I just can’t understand how it wasn’t an obvious development, and why it hasn’t been possible at least for as long as it’s been possible to begin contracts over the internet.

Out of interest, I then went and checked other mobile phone networks. From what I could see, Optus, Virgin, Three and Telstra all had this same ridiculous policy – to renew or upgrade a contract you needed to call or visit a store. It was unbelievable! I encourage each of you to put in a request for this functionality at your mobile network, and see if we can get this system fixed!

If anyone knows why this is the state of play, please let me know. I’d also be glad to hear of any providers which do allow contract renewal online, or information about this improving at any of the previously mentions mobile networks.

Vodafone looks like being the hot mobile provider in the lead up to Christmas with the release of their new “Infinite” mobile phone plans. Most mobile providers currently have some form of unlimited plan, but none of them do it for only $45 per month!!

The entry level Infinite plan is indeed only $45 per month – a significantly cheaper monthly access fee for an unlimited plan than any other provider in the Australian mobile industry. It will be interesting to see how Optus responds to this move and whether Telstra will change any of their plans in order to become more competitive.

Mobile Phones on the Infinite Plans

There are differing contract lengths to choose from (more details below), so mobile phones on the Vodafone website will give you a price for a 12 month contract and for a 24 month contract. There are some great phones available on these plans by:

Also of note on the Vodafone Infinite plans, there is additional credit to cover some services which are sometimes not covered under an unlimited plan. For example – on the $45 infinite plan you get $45 of credit to cover voicemail and calls to 13 and 1800 numbers. On the $65 infinite plan you get $65 of credit to cover voicemail and 13/1300/1800 numbers as well as international voice and video calls. Worth a notable mention is the fact that on the $100 infinite plan you get 13/1300/1800 calls and voicemail included in your unlimited call quota. You can use other services for your $100 of credit.
