Our Opinion on the Dodo $59.90 Bundle

This is a fantastic phone and internet deal if it fits your usage profile and hardware preference. If you would usually look at a $49 Mobile Cap, then the mobile cap plan will be right for you. The handsets are decent. The Nokia 6300 is a great little phone with Bluetooth, a 2 Mega Pixel Camera and more.

The Asus Eee PC 701 SD (pronounced E PC) is a super-compact, portable laptop that has garnered rave reviews. It’s purpose built for mobility, so if you are on the go, this could be the perfect laptop for you. They are worth about $400, so picking one up for free as part of this Bundle deal is great.

You will need to be careful that you don’t exceed the 250MB data allowance – otherwise it starts to get expensive. So you wouldn’t want this package to run everything you do on the internet. But for students, business people or anyone who wants the convenience of internet mobility – without needing 5GB per month – then the 250MB plan will be fine. Just keep an eye on how much you download.

Dodo does not usually provide a USB modem for free on their 250MB plan, so getting a free USB modem and a free Laptop is just bonus after bonus.

If you have higher mobile phone or internet usage, then this isn’t the deal for you. You’ll end up spending a lot more in excess fees. But if it fits your usage profile, visit the Dodo website and enter your details for one of their staff to call you back.

The past few years have been great for consumers in the battle for reasonably priced 3G Wireless Broadband. Prices have fallen significantly. The price war between the mobile phone companies has been quite spectacular and brought prices within the realms of consumer affordability, not just business.

The upcoming year looks set for more of the same – but with a twist. There are likely to be more and more offers for a ‘free’ laptop with your 3G wireless broadband plan. It may have to be the best up sell line ever! “Would you like a laptop with your internet?”

You have to join up on the ‘yes’ $49 Cap for 24 months. In all the advertising now they tell you this means that the total minimum cost is $1,176 over 24 months and that cancellation fees apply. True, but boring.

The Plan

The $49 ‘yes’ plan from Optus is a good one too. For your $49 per month you get $330 of calls to any mobile network or standard landlines. Once you use that allowance up, calls revert to the standard call rate (of 80 cents per min plus 35 cent flagfall) but then then get another $350 of Optus2Optus value.

The plan is for a 24 month contract if you want to get both the Sony Ericsson W980 and Xbox 360 paying nothing upfront.

Optus has just launched Naked DSL, which gives you ADSL2+ broadband speeds without having to pay line rental each month. iinet, Internode, Exetel and a number of smaller providers have already launched it, but Optus is the first of the big telcos to move in this direction. AAPT has been rumoured for some time to be bringing out Naked DSL, but it hasn’t happened yet. And of course Telstra is holding on and defending their landline network – and charging everyone $30 per month for the privilege of being connected.

Bundle Naked DSL with your Mobile Phone

Optus has taken a different strategy from iinet and Internode, who are focusing on providing VoIP services to replace the landline. Optus is offering their best deal if you bundle your mobile phone with your Naked DSL service. With a great range of Cap and Timeless mobile plans, that will be great for you if you just want to make calls from your mobile. If you don’t bundle your mobile, then there is a $248 set up fee plus modem costs for joining Optus Naked DSL. That s hardly worth it, so if you want to get Optus NDSL, then you really need to combine your mobile too.

The bundled plans start at $49.99 for 7GB and $59.99 for 15GB with free set up and a free basic modem. Uploads and downloads are counted in the data allowance, but the data can be used any time – there are no peak and off peak times. There is also a $99.99 plan for 30GB, which includes free set up and a free Wi-Fi modem if you bundle.

Sign Up Your Mobile With Optus First

We’d suggest getting your Optus mobile online first – that way you will get the $50 or $100 Online Bonus Credit! Once that is approved, you will be an existing Optus customer and can start getting your Naked DSL organised. If you do it all over the phone at one time, you’ll miss out on the Online Bonus Credit.

Optus has now launched the highly anticipated HTC Dream – the first Google Android Mobile Phone launched outside the United States.

If you’re a user of the Google search engine, Gmail, You Tube, Google Maps or Google Calendar, then the HTC Dream helps you bring all of that functionality onto you mobile phone. There’s one-touch access to all of these Google services.

The phone has a 3.2 inch touch screen which is fast and responsive. You can customise the home screen to alert you of email, SMS or Instant Messaging. As the picture to the right shows, there is a full QWERTY keyboard, which is consistent with many of the popular PDA/mobile phone designs from HTC over recent years. The HTC Dream also has a microSD (SD 2.0 compatible) expansion slot up to 8GB.

I won’t go so far as to say we were the reason that Vodafone has seen some sense and dropped the price of their Dell Mini 9 with 5GB Wireless Internet bundle. But in last week’s article about the emergence of the free laptop with a wireless internet plan we suggested that Vodafone needed to drop the price of their bundle from $69.95 to $59.95. Yesterday they announced that they would be doing exactly that!

$69.95 per month for 5GB of data and a Dell Mini 9 just wasn’t a very good bundle deal – if you bought the wireless internet and the laptop separately it would have been cheaper than $69.95 per month. A bundle needs to be excellent value for the customer seeing they are giving multiple services to the one provider.

We now happily recommend the $59.95 per month for 5GB of wireless broadband and a Dell Mini 9 as an excellent deal. Dodo’s deal for the same price includes a $49 Mobile Cap and free mobile phone, but only 250MB of wireless broadband. Perfect for low internet users, but Vodafone’s bundle offer will suit higher data users and be more attractive to the business markets. Vodafone also includes a new feature of sharing data between users – great move by Vodafone.
